Mehran's Story
Mehran Sorourian is a former scientist, award-winning public speaker, TEDx coach, podcaster, and advocate who has transformed her personal struggles into a powerful mission: amplifying the voices of the underheard and empowering them to speak with clarity and confidence.
Originally from Iran, Mehran immigrated to the United States in 2001 with no English and immense determination. After learning English, she earned her bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biology from the University of Texas at Arlington. For nearly a decade, she worked in biotech research, contributing to cures for rare diseases and cancer. Yet despite her scientific achievements, Mehran faced a painful reality: she couldn't communicate effectively in professional spaces. That struggle became the catalyst for her transformation.
In 2016, Mehran founded her first business, born from her pain and her refusal to let language and cultural differences silence her or others. For almost a decade, she has been coaching adult immigrants, helping them reclaim their voices and advance professionally using her cross-cultural communication trainings. Her work extends beyond individual coaching—it's about systemic change.
In 2020, Mehran launched Immigrant Conversations, a globally ranked podcast (top 5%) with 63 episodes celebrating immigrant stories while addressing challenges impacting their growth. Her advocacy deepened from 2022 to 2024 when she chaired the DEI Committee at San Diego SHRM, creating safe spaces for difficult conversations and developing comprehensive resources that simplified DEI efforts for over 600 HR leaders.
During the pandemic, Mehran launched a platform and trained 120+ women business owners to deliver over 4,000 hours of virtual education and entertainment at no or low cost. Her dedication earned her the Rising Star Women of the Year Award from the National Association of Women Business Owners in San Diego.
Mehran doesn't just speak about advocacy—she practices it. She has represented her community during advocacy weeks in Washington, DC, and held multiple storytelling training sessions, equipping immigrants, refugees, and allies with tools to advocate powerfully for their communities.
Her greatest passion is empowering youth. Sparked by watching a presidential debate and dreaming of diverse young leaders on those stages, Mehran has dedicated herself to developing the next generation. Through workshops, coaching, and TEDx preparation, she has helped hundreds of middle and high school students develop self-expression, confidence, leadership, and presence. She partners with nonprofits supporting underrepresented youth, including Elena's Light, provides complimentary training at local high schools, and coaches young people onto the TEDx stage.
Mehran continues delivering cross-cultural communication training to companies and organizations at every chance she has and continues to mentor first generation college students. From executives to first-generation professionals, from immigrants finding their voice to teenagers stepping into their power, Mehran's impact ripples across generations and communities. She has transformed her pain into purpose, proving that when we amplify the underheard, we all rise.
